With the Austin Major just around the corner, and souvenir weapon skins being such a ‘major’ part of the tournament, Valve has decided to try an experimental update to the souvenir packages.

Just like previous Majors, there will be opportunities to purchase and claim souvenir packages from matches you want. However, with this new update, they reveal that if you purchase or claim a souvenir package from a playoff match, you will receive a new ‘Souvenir Highlight Package’.
This ‘Souvenir Highlight Package’ is only exclusive to the playoffs stage. These packages will contain a souvenir weapon with an attached charm that will feature a highlight video from the playoff match that you chose from. The description of the received item with charm attached will include the information about the highlight video itself and you will be able to view the clip from your inventory slot, in Steam or even while spectating a teammate in-game.
This update could either be a relatively cool new idea, or a massive flop. It does however feel like Valve are putting their resources for the game in the wrong place, focusing on souvenir items that… realistically people don’t really care for anymore. Instead they should be applying ample resources into the gameplay and anti-cheat. However saying this, it is nice to see Valve trying new things.
